Various All Star Teams 2008-2014

This post is basically just a collection of the various All Star Teams I’ve compiled since 2008. In most cases I compiled the lineups right after the end of the tournament/season they’re about. I didn’t change my selections prior to this publication. Because of this my choices represent the opinions I held back then, but not necessarily the ones I hold today.

When compiling those teams, my aim was to field the players who performed the best during that tournament/season and to build a team that could somehow actually work. So no ‘2 defenders, 6 strikers’ formations for me.

  1. Thank your for compiling this. Very interesting and detailed. With regard to your all time XI, one question concerning the corpus of games that you evaluated. Your best international side is Hungary. To my knowledge, not all of the team’s games were televised. Are there any particular games that you base your evaluation upon?

    • Dear Zlatan,

you made an excellent point. There is very little footage of that Hungary side. I watched their famous win at Wembley maybe a dozen times and tried to find all extended highlights clips of their matches. But the fact remains that I was able to only watch very few of their matches.

So why did I choose them? Well what I saw was excellent. I’m not sure if there ever was a team that was so much ahead of their time as they were. Maybe the Dutch in the early 70s but apart from that…
I also based my judgement on their statistics. They are famous for having an excellent record, only losing one match during their prime. I’m sure you know which match that was. There is a good case to be made that they were the best team in the world for at least 4 years. There are very, very few teams who can boast such a claim. Maybe Brazil around 1960, maybe Spain around 2010 and maybe France around 2000. But Spain, for instance, lost quite a few matches between the tournaments they won. In contrast to that, Hungary outplayed almost every opponent they faced between 1950 and 1954, often with massive results. And that in a time where consistency of performance was even rarer than it is today!

What is often held against them is, of course, that they didn’t win the most important match they played in. While I can’t deny that, one should remember that they actually won some competitions. They won Olympic Gold and the predecessor of the European Championship. That’s not too bad.

Yeah, these are some of my thoughts on them.

  2. Good, i have a question, how do you rank these players as an all time performers: Baresi, Koeman, Hierro, Piqué, Bonucci i mean whos the best and why?
